Saugus Iron Works Field Trip

April 15th and 16th, 2008

OBJECTIVE
To use a digital camera to take photos of artifacts, people, objects, and buildings, etc. that represent one of five major categories at the Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Learn the basic functions of a digital camera: taking a picture, framing your photo, and downloading image files to a computer.
  2. In pairs, practice using your assigned digital camera by taking pictures in your classroom and around school.
  3. Review your photos on the camera's display and DELETE photos that you do not want or need.
  4. DOWNLOAD your pictures to a laptop computer.
  5. ORGANIZE your image files in a folder on the computer. Include your teacher name and your first initial and last name in the folder name. Example: briatico_jsmith
  6. Review your pictures on the laptop.
  7. Now that you can see your pictures full size. Are there any that don't look good? DELETE those photos.
  8. SAVE your image folder onto a Flash drive.
  9. Write a descriptive caption for each of your photos.

Are you ready for your photo assignment?

We are sending you to the Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site in Saugus, MA.

Your local newspaper wants your top 3 best images for a cover story.
  1. In pairs, your teacher will assign you and your partner to one of the five categories below.
  2. Share and discuss with your partner what you already know about the category.
  3. Get your camera and check to make sure it functions.
  4. Arrive at the SIW.
  5. As you tour the site, search for items that you believe represent your assigned category. Decide with your partner WHAT and WHY the picture will fit into the category. Use paper to record your thoughts. Ask the Park Ranger for help if you are having trouble getting the shot SAFELY?
  6. Your are free to take as many photos as you like but remember you may only submit a total of three images.
  7. Write a descriptive caption for your photo.
  8. Post your top 3 images to your teachers wikispace page.
  9. As a class, review and discuss the photo submission.
  10. Select the best photo for each category.
